The dramatic sea arch at Dyrholaey is one of the most accessible puffin viewing spots in South Iceland. From mid-May to mid-August, thousands of puffins nest in the grassy clifftops. Walk along the marked paths above the lighthouse for incredible close-up views.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

50 min drive

The towering basalt cliffs near Reynisfjara beach host a puffin colony visible from the beach below. Binoculars or a telephoto lens will reward you with excellent views of puffins launching from and returning to their burrows. Best viewing from late May through early August.

Home to the largest Atlantic puffin colony in the world. Take the 30-minute ferry from Landeyjahofn and spend a day exploring Heimaey island. In August, locals participate in the beloved tradition of rescuing baby pufflings that get confused by town lights.

Ingolfshofdi Nature Reserve

2.5 hr drive

For a true adventure, visit this remote headland accessible only by tractor-drawn hay cart across black sand flats. The guided tour takes you to nesting colonies of puffins, great skuas, and other seabirds. Tours run May to August, weather permitting.

•Best time: Mid-April to mid-August. Peak season is June and July.
•Binoculars: Even at close colonies, binoculars help you appreciate the colourful details.
•Stay on paths: Puffin burrows are fragile. Walking off-path can collapse nesting tunnels.
•Best time of day: Early morning and evening when puffins are most active.
•Weather: Dress in layers and bring a windproof jacket. Coastal cliffs can be windy.
